To obtain a CPF number, applicants must provide valid identification and demonstrate legitimate need for Brazilian tax identification. The process requires specific documentation and proper submission through authorized channels. Required Documents

CPF applications require specific documentation depending on your location and status.

Standard requirements include:

  • Completed CPF application form (we process this for you)
  • Proof of address
  • Consulate-specific requirements may apply for overseas applications
  • A document showing your name and your mother’s name, for example your passport or birth certificate

All foreign documents must be properly translated and may require consular authentication (only applies if you’re applying inside of Brazil).

  • Authorized representatives: Through legal proxies or agents

CPF processing times vary by application method and location.

Typical timeframes:

Brazil CPF Registration: Why Choose Us Over Going Solo

1. Navigate the Documentation Maze

CPF applications seem simple but have specific formatting and documentation requirements that vary by consulate and application method. Many DIY attempts fail due to incorrect address formatting, improper document translations, or missing supporting paperwork.

Avoid rejection cycles: We ensure your documentation package meets exact requirements before submission, preventing the frustrating cycle of rejections and resubmissions.

2. Choose the Right Application Channel

Not all CPF application methods work for every situation. Choosing the wrong channel can lead to unnecessary delays, higher costs, or outright rejections. Some consulates have specific procedures, while others may not process certain types of applications.

Strategic routing: We identify the fastest, most appropriate application channel based on your location, timeline, and documentation status.

Consulate knowledge: Our experience with different Brazilian consulates helps avoid locations known for slower processing or stricter requirements.

3. Prevent the "Address Problem" Mishaps

One of the biggest stumbling blocks for CPF applications is address requirements. Brazilian addresses follow specific formatting rules, and many applications are rejected for improper address presentation or insufficient address proof.

Address formatting expertise: We ensure your address meets Brazilian formatting standards and provide guidance on acceptable proof of address documentation.

Alternative solutions: When standard address proof isn’t available, we help identify acceptable alternatives that satisfy requirements.

4. Avoid Legal Representative Confusion

Many applicants don’t realize when they need legal representation or how to properly authorize representatives for CPF applications. This confusion leads to rejected applications and wasted time.

Representative guidance: We clarify when legal representation is required and help establish proper authorization when needed.

Power of attorney expertise: When representative applications are necessary, we ensure proper documentation and authorization procedures.

What Everyone Wants to Know About CPF

Getting a Brazilian tax number shouldn’t be mysterious. Here are the answers to common questions surrounding CPF registration.

Getting a Brazilian tax number shouldn’t be mysterious. Here are the answers to common questions surrounding CPF registration.

Do I really need a CPF just to buy property in Brazil?

Yes, absolutely. Any real estate transaction in Brazil requires a CPF number for the buyer. This includes signing preliminary contracts, making deposits, or completing the final purchase. Banks also require CPF numbers for financing or wire transfers related to property purchases.

Can I get a CPF if I don't live in Brazil?

Yes, non-residents can obtain CPF numbers through Brazilian consulates abroad.

What happens if I make a mistake on my CPF application?

Mistakes typically result in rejection and require resubmission with corrected information. This can add weeks to your timeline and may require new documentation. Some errors can be corrected after approval, but this involves additional bureaucracy and potential fees.

How long is my CPF number valid?

CPF numbers are permanent and don’t expire. However, inactive CPF registrations can be suspended if you don’t file required annual declarations or maintain proper status. Reactivating a suspended CPF can be more complex than the original application.

Can someone else apply for a CPF on my behalf?

Yes, but this requires proper legal authorization through a power of attorney (procuração). The representative must be authorized to act on your behalf and submit specific documentation proving their authority to apply for your CPF.

What's the difference between CPF and CNPJ?

CPF is for individuals, while CNPJ is for companies. If you’re starting a business in Brazil, you’ll eventually need both: a personal CPF and a company CNPJ.

What are the chances of getting accepted?

We’ve never seen someone get rejected, but as always we can’t guarantee that all applications will be successful.

Is it better to apply in or outside of Brazil?

We can do either, though we recommend applying from outside Brazil.

Once I’ve made the payment what are the next steps?

To proceed with your consulate appointment, please send us the following two documents via email to [email protected]:

  1. Identification document (that includes your mother’s name). This is typically your birth certificate, though in some countries passports also display the mother’s name.
  2. Proof of address

Once we receive these documents, we’ll take care of all the necessary preparations on our end. Our team will then reach out to you directly to schedule your in-person appointment at the consulate at a time that works for you.

What happens during the consulate appointment?

This is a routine, straightforward appointment that serves as the final step before your CPF number is issued. The appointment can be conducted at the consulate in your country of residence. For example, if you live in the UK, you can attend the appointment at the Brazilian consulate in the UK. If you’re applying whilst in Brazil, the appointment will take place there.

During the appointment, consulate staff will simply verify and confirm your documents. It’s a brief, administrative process designed to finalise your application. Once this step is completed, you’ll be ready to receive your CPF number.

Are there any additional fees?

There are no additional fees outside of the one-time payment of $200.
